BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State women’s tennis team collected five victories on day three of the ITA Southern Regional.
“Today was a much better day as we focused on the challenges that were in front of us,” head coach Chris Hooshyar said. “I knew the ladies had it in them to respond, and they did. I am very proud of all of them, they all battled hard. Some came up short, but Dharani [Niroshan] had herself a day. We look forward to another long day of battling tomorrow.”
Sophomore Dharani Niroshan advances to Sunday’s singles quarterfinal after taking her matches in the second round and round of 16. In the second round, Niroshan defeated Florentine Dekkers of LSU 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and grabbed her second victory of the day in the round of 16 against Kelsey Mize of Ole Miss 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Niroshan will take on Petra Sedlackova of Alabama in Sunday’s quarterfinals at 10 a.m.
Jayna Clemens and Athina Pitta each took down their opponents in the singles consolation round. Clemens earned a win over Alice Klinteby of Louisiana 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8, while Pitta took down Emma Kette of Ole Miss 7-5, 6-3.
Pitta and Alexandra Mikhailuk found success in doubles for State on Saturday. The duo defeated North Alabama’s Ada Karabacak and Marta Torres Rodriguez 8-3 to advance into Sunday’s round of 16. The MSU duo will meet Lucie Devier and Ludmila Kareisova of Ole Miss at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
