Spartans Set to Conclude B1G Homestand


EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State women’s tennis is back in action, continuing conference play with a weekend doubleheader against Minnesota and #17 Wisconsin. The Spartans will face the Golden Gophers on Saturday, March 25 before taking on the Badgers on Sunday, March 26. First serve for both duals are scheduled for 11 a.m.

#UNMATCHED APPROACH
The Spartans enter the weekend at 7-7 (0-3 B1G) having dropped three-consecutive contests and are in the midst of a three-match homestand against Big Ten opponents. Sophomore Liisa Vehvilainen leads the Spartans in singles with an 8-4 record, including a 6-3 record at the No. 1 singles slot.
 
In doubles, the Spartans are led by the pairing of Ayshe Can & Vehvilainen, who have an 8-3 record heading into the weekend having dropped their last two matches after starting the season 8-1. 
 
LAST POINT
The Spartans competed hard in their third conference match of the season against No. 63 Nebraska, ultimately falling 4-2 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday, March 19.
In doubles, the tandem of Marley Lambert and Dagmar Zdrubecka drew first blood taking down Nebraska’s Isabel Adrover Gallego and Ana Carmen Zamburek, 6-1. The Spartans then clinched the doubles point as Issey Purser and Nicole Conard defeated Cornhuskers Lucy Loy and Anfisa Danilchenko 7-5 to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. 
 
In singles, Nebraska would claim a quick three matches before Liisa Vehvilainen snatched a win at No. 1 singles to pull MSU to within one. However, Nebraska would later clinch the match as Danilchenko defeated MSU’s Juliette Nask in three sets.
 
B1G FOES
Minnesota heads into the weekend at 5-9 (0-5 B1G) as the Golden Gophers make their way to The Great Lakes State for a pair of matches against MSU and #3 Michigan. Minnesota dropped its last match against No. 9 Ohio State 4-0 as the Buckeyes were able to take the match with two wins as Minnesota was forced to forfeit one doubles and two singles positions. The Golden Gophers are led by junior Zeyneb Sarioglan who is undefeated this season in singles and 12-4 overall. Minnesota leads the all-time series 29-14 including a 4-0 win in Minneapolis last season.
