Spartan Women’s Tennis Has Solid Performances At ITA Regionals


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michigan State women’s tennis wrapped up their ITA Midwest Regional Championship run securing victories and putting together promising performances. 

The Spartans began their slate on Thursday with redshirt-sophomore Oriana Parkins-Godwin competing in singles-qualifying matches. Parkins-Godwin put up a hard fight against Southern Illinois’ Margaux Guibal Britt, losing her match, 6-3, 6-3. 

Play continued Friday with the main draw of singles matches. The Spartan trio of Matilde Morais, Ellie Blackford and Liisa Vehvilainen all were picks for the main draw. 

Junior Morais was victorious against her opponent, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Ellie Blackford was unable to finish her match due to injury. Vehvilainen had a hard-fought battle versus Michigan foe Reese Miller, losing in a close battle of 6-4, 6-4. 

Continuing Friday action was women’s doubles. In doubles, the Parkins-Godwin/Vehvilainen pair had a competitive match, losing a tiebreaker, 7-8 (4-7). Due to injury, the Morais/Blackford tandem was unable to compete in doubles. 

Morais moved on to the next round of 32 on Saturday, competing against Big Ten opponent Alessia Cau from Ohio State. Morais was able to win the match in just two sets, securing the win, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). In the continuing round of 16, Morais fell to Michigan’s Emily Sartz-Lunde, losing the match, 6-1, 6-1. 

The weekend closed out for the Green & White with consolation matches, with just one Spartan, Vehvilainen competing. In the main draw of consolation matches, Vehvilainen defeated her Bowling Green opponent 6-1, 6-3. 

Overall, the performance from this tournament showed promise for the upcoming season. Women’s tennis has a bye week, before returning home to host the Michigan State Classic hosted by Auto Owners Insurance from Oct. 25-27.
