Smith & Friend Through to the Round of 16 at ITA All-Americans


TULSA, Okla. – Arizona’s Colton Smith and Jay Friend have moved on to the round of 16 in singles competition at the ITA All-American Championships after a winning day in Tulsa. 

Starting bright and early Thursday morning was No. 15 Friend [9-16] up against No. 75 Rudy Quan of UCLA. The Wildcat junior dropped his first set in a close 5-7 battle. One down, Friend came back to win his second set 6-3 and then shutout his opponent 6-0 in the third. He will go on to play No. 37 Pedro Vives of TCU in the round of 16 Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 a.m. MST. 

Over on court nine No. 5 Smith [5] rolled over No. 57 Luca Staeheli (NC State) 6-1 in his first set. The second set was a closer call, with the two going game for game before Smith pulled ahead to win 6-4. He will go on to play No. 30 Sebastian Gorzny of Texas Friday at 7:00 a.m. MST. 

Later that afternoon, Smith and Friend fell to No. 23 Tarvet/Klaassen (San Diego) 6-1, 6-4 in doubles play.
