DURHAM – Duke head coach Ramsey Smith announced Wednesday that senior Michael Heller has been named a team captain for the 2023 season.
“I am very pleased to name Michael as a team captain of Duke tennis, joining fellow seniors Garrett Johns and Andrew Zhang,” Smith said. “Michael has emerged as a key leader in our program this season by virtue of the example he sets on and off the court. We know that each player has a unique contribution to make within the program, and it’s exciting for us to see Michael’s impact right now, as he has faced some setbacks in previous years. His perseverance and efforts to be at his best for his team are paying off now. Michael is known for his contagious positive energy, and he epitomizes the ‘team first’ mindset that we preach, which has led him to become the heart and soul of Duke tennis this year.”
A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Heller, who is ranked with Zhang as the No. 49 doubles team nationally, currently sits with a 5-2 overall ledger in singles action, and an impressive 11-4 record in doubles play at the top position.
Duke has a training weekend before it hits the road again at Virginia Tech and Virginia on March 17 and 19, respectively.
