ROSEMONT, Ill. – Wisconsin women’s tennis athlete Maria Sholokhova has earned Big Ten Player of the Week after claiming individual honors at the ITA All-American Championships last week.
On a 6-0 run, Sholokhova took down two Top-10 ranked players in No. 1 Mary Stoaina (6-4, 6-3) and No. 6 Savannah Broadus (7-6, 6-1).
The junior defeated Elza Tomase (6-3, 6-3), earning the title of 2024 ITA All-American Champion.
The Russia native is the first man or woman from Wisconsin to win the tournament. Thanks to her title, she is the program’s fourth singles All-American, eighth overall, and the first since Barbara Urbanska in 1998.
With her success, Sholokhova became an automatic qualifier for the 2024 NCAA Individual Championships, which will take place in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 19-24.
This is Sholokhova’s first weekly honor this season and the third of her career.
