Shelton Defeats Shapovalov at Wimbledon, Advances to Face No. 1 Sinner in Round of 16

Ben Shelton has advanced to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in his young career.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gators tennis great Ben Shelton is no stranger to deep runs at Grand Slam events in his young career, having advanced to the semifinals of the US Open and quarterfinals of the Australian Open just last year.

After a pair of third-round exits at the Australian Open and French Open in 2024, 14th-ranked Shelton is once again raising eyebrows at a Grand Slam. On Saturday, Shelton defeated Denis Shapovalov across five sets (6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2) in the third round at Wimbledon to earn a trip to face No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 on Sunday. A victory would send Shelton to the quarterfinals.

“I’m happy with where I’ve gotten so far,” Shelton said, “but definitely not satisfied.”

Shelton also set a new Wimbledon record with a blistering 153-mph serve during the opening game against Shapovalov on Saturday. The fireball also ranked as the ninth-fastest serve of all-time.

First serve between Shelton and Sinner on Sunday is set for approximately 10:30 a.m. ET on Court No. 1. The match will air on ESPN.
