CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After two rounds of qualifying matches, the 32-player field for the singles main draw at the Neitzel Family Open is set. Seven current and former Illinois student-athletes are slated to compete in singles play, with the first round scheduled for Wednesday at Atkins Tennis Center.
Gabrielius Guzauskas and Lucas Horve both progressed through qualifying to earn a spot in the singles main draw. Guzauskas defeated Ryan Fishback, 7-5, 6-2, on Monday in the first round of singles qualifiers before securing a place in the main draw with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Illini teammate Tyler Bowers on Tuesday. Guzauskas will take on No. 3-seeded Cannon Kingsley on Wednesday in the second match of the day on Court 5 N.
Horve took care of business in the opening round of qualifying with a 7-5, 6-4 decision against Corey Gaal on Monday. He then progressed out of the qualifiers and into the main draw via a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Benjamin Thomas George on Tuesday morning. Horve is set to face off with Noah Schachter on Wednesday in the final match of the day on Court 5 N.
Kenta Miyoshi will begin his singles tournament run in the first match of the day on Court 1, where he will be matched up against James Tracy at 10 a.m.
Karlis Ozolins will compete on Court 1 once Miyoshi’s match ends, with the Latvia native scheduled to play No. 4-seeded Andre Ilagan.
Former teammates-turned-foes Alex Petrov and Zeke Clark are set to square off in the third match of the day on Court 1, while William Mroz will begin his singles run against Dan Martin in the final match on Court 1.
In the opening round of doubles play on Tuesday, Guzauskas and Mroz teamed up to defeat former Illini Alex Brown and Zeke Clark in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Doubles play is set to resume on Thursday.
