Britain’s Dan Evans missed out on a place in the San Diego Open final as he lost 6-3 7-5 to Marcos Giron.
World number 25 Evans failed to convert three break points in the fifth game of the first set and was immediately broken by American Giron.
World number 58 Giron, who hit 11 aces, broke Evans again at 5-5 in the second set before serving out the match.
“I played twice and he’d beaten me twice, so I knew it was going to be a hell of a tough match,” Giron said.
“But I’m really happy with the way I played under pressure. That’s kind of why I’m here.”
Giron will play American world number 69 Brandon Nakashima, who beat Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-4 7-6 (7-3), in Sunday’s final.
“It feels amazing. It’s the first final that I’ve made this year and no better place to do it than in my hometown San Diego,” Nakashima said.
“I feel confident with my game right now and I’m looking forward to [the final] tomorrow.”
