LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men’s tennis doubles team of Natan Rodrigues and Fabien Salle captured the ITA Ohio Valley Regional doubles title and Salle went on to win the singles championship on the final day of the tournament Monday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
“It was fun to watch our guys play,” said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. “They all worked hard to get to this point. Their intensity level was great and I was proud to see them out there today.”
The day started off with an all-Louisville doubles final as 48th-ranked duo of sophomore Rodrigues and graduate senior Salle faced teammates senior David Mizrahi and freshman Will Mayew in the title match. Rodrigues and Salle took the first set 6-1 with Mizrahi and Mayew countering with a 7-6(2) win in the second set to push the match to a third-set tiebreaker. Rodrigues and Salle clinched the win by a score of 10-4.
Later in the day, Rodrigues and Salle met as opponents in the singles championship match. They battled early on, but Salle, No. 84 in the ITA singles preseason rankings, picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win to claim his second title on the day.
“Obviously it’s a very special feeling, we’ve been looking forward to this event,” said Salle. “I had a tough first round match, but after that I played my way to the final and then played well on the last day. It was very special to see my teammates and friends over there when I was playing. We’re working hard every single day for these kinds of events and so when I have a chance to play singles and doubles on the same day, it’s a very special feeling for sure.”
All four Louisville players earned the automatic berth to the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships which will take place November 2-6, 2022, at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California.
