EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Men’s Tennis’ Ronald Hohmann III was named Big Ten Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week on Wednesday, Feb. 28, for his clutch efforts that led No. 16 MSU to the Blue Gray Classic final over the weekend.
Hohmann, a graduate student from Oyster Bay, N.Y., earns his first conference recognition as a Spartan, sharing the honor with Ohio State 5th-year Cannon Kingsley. The LSU transfer and three-year No. 1 for the Tigers also earned SEC Player of the Week once, for the week of April 18, 2023.
Currently ranked No. 19 in the ITA singles player rankings and previously as high as No. 11 in the nation, Hohmann collected his team-leading third and fourth ranked wins of the season over the weekend.
In Friday’s Blue Gray Classic-opening 4-1 win over No. 49 Boise State, Hohmann clinched the victory for MSU with a win at No. 1 singles over national No. 43 Sam Sippel in straight sets, 7-6 [7-0], 6-4. On Saturday, in a 3-3 duel with No. 44 Auburn and as the last match still playing, Hohmann battled to thrilling third-set comeback win over No. 44 Tyler Stice, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The veteran would also pick up a win in doubles on Friday, pairing up with graduate student Graydon Lair to win 6-4 at No. 3 doubles against Boise State and clinch the doubles point for MSU.
After a tough defeat to No. 66 Paul Inchauspe of Princeton in the final Saturday night, Hohmann’s season record moved to 7-2, 4-2 against nationally ranked opponents. He is also now 7-3 in doubles in 2024.
