DURHAM – Duke men’s tennis freshman Pedro Rodenas has been selected the PNC Achievers Duke Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
The Madrid, Spain, native helped lift Duke to its first NCAA Super Regional appearance since 2015 after the Blue Devils defeated UNC Wilmington and Cornell in the Durham Regional last weekend.
Rodenas first claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over UNC Wilmington’s Reece Falck on Saturday on court two before securing a 6-1, 2-1 (ret.) victory on Sunday over Vladislav Melnic of Cornell. The rookie is a perfect 17-0 when playing on court two and is riding a 12-match winning streak heading into this weekend’s super regional. With his two wins on the weekend, Rodenas ties Michael Redlicki and Nicolas Alvarez for ninth all-time in most singles wins by a freshman with 31.
In addition, he also teamed up with senior Garrett Johns in doubles play to go 2-0 on the weekend to help Duke’s cause. The pair bested Drew Broadstreet and Trey Mallory of UNC Wilmington, 6-2, on the main court on Saturday before recording a 6-3 victory over Cornell’s Adit Sinha and Nathan Mao on Sunday.
The rookie leads the team with a 26-2 dual singles record, including a 7-3 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
The Blue Devils travel to face fifth-seeded and fifth-ranked Virginia on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort in the NCAA Super Regional.
Tickets for the NCAA Super Regional match are $5 for general admission and $3 for students with a valid ID per day (ages 2 and up are required to have a ticket). Tickets will be available for purchase online, over the phone, or at the Bryant Hall ticket office on the campus of the University of Virginia and can be picked up at the courts.
