Rodenas Named PNC Achiever Student-Athlete of the Week

DURHAM – Duke men’s tennis freshman Pedro Rodenas has been selected the PNC Achievers Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following his strong performance last weekend.

The Madrid, Spain, native helped Duke defeat No. 13 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 5-2, for the second consecutive season to remain in sole possession of second place in the ACC standings.

Rodenas pulled off his highest career ranked singles win when he bested No. 30 Ryan Seggerman 6-2, 6-2 on court two. He also teamed up with senior Garrett Johns in doubles play to battle No. 14 Seggerman and Casey Kania. The pair, who are ranked No. 32 nationally, were in a close 6-6 match before the contest was halted and Duke secured the doubles point.

The rookie leads the team with a 19-2 dual singles record, including a 5-3 mark against nationally ranked opponents. In addition, he is 9-1 in ACC play and a perfect 10-0 on court two.

The Blue Devils welcome Miami and Florida State to Ambler Tennis Stadium for their regular season weekend finale on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Duke hosts the Hurricanes on Friday at 5 p.m. before welcoming the Seminoles on Sunday at noon. Both contests will be Royal Blue matches.
