TULSA, Okla. – Duke men’s tennis freshman Pedro Rodenas recorded two singles wins on Tuesday to advance to the main draw at the 2022 ITA All-American Championships.
Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Rodenas strung together his third consecutive singles victory to join senior Garrett Johns in the main draw, which begins Wednesday.
Rodenas started his day besting Florida State’s Alex Bulte 6-4, 6-4 before defeating Florida’s Nate Bonetto in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. He is scheduled to face off against Alafia Ayeni of Kentucky on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. CT in his next match.
Johns begins his tournament at 9 a.m. when he matches up against Stanford’s Nishesh Basavareddy. Both of Duke’s matches on Wednesday will take place at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Senior Andrew Zhang concluded his time at the tournament on Tuesday. He won his qualifying second round match over Melvin Manuel of Arkansas due to walkover but fell in his final match of the qualifying round 6-4, 7-5 to Alexander Bernard of Ohio State.
Rodenas and Johns also closed out their tenure in the doubles event on Tuesday. The duo fell in a tough 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 tie-break decision to Louisville’s Fabien Salle and Natan Rodrigues.
