GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Qavia Lopez, the top-ranked recruit in the nation for the 2023 women’s tennis class, has signed with Florida women’s tennis, head coach Roland Thornqvist announced Wednesday afternoon.
Lopez, a 5-foot-7 native of Delray Beach, Fla., is the Babola No. 1 recruit in the nation, in addition to earning five-star and blue-chip honors. She owns a career-best International Tennis Federation ranking of No. 19.
No stranger to top-level competition, Lopez was victorious in her opening-round matchup at the 2022 Wimbledon Junior Championships. She also reached the semifinal round of the 2022 J1 Nottingham, JB1 Indian Wells and JA Criciuma tournaments. At the 2022 Junior Australian Open, Lopez tallied a pair of victories.
Additionally, in doubles competition, Lopez has claimed four titles, winning the 2022 JB1 Indian Wells title, 2021 JB1 Nicholasville and JB1 San Diego titles and 2020 J3 Lousada title. She was also victorious at the 2022 Easter Bowl.
She has reached the semifinals of the Naples 15K in singles competition after not dropping a set in the opening three rounds, in addition to reaching the doubles final at the Cancun 15K and Naples 15K. In 2019, she claimed the J4 Guatemala Tournament title after five-consecutive victories.
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist
“We are thrilled to have a player like Qavia join our team next year. Not only is she perhaps the most talented player in the country in her class, but she possesses the work ethic and mentality we need in order to compete for championships again.”
