Petrov, Kovacevic Advance in ATP Challenger


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Junior Alex Petrov and former Illini Aleks Kovacevic both earned wins in the second day of the Paine Schwartz partners $50,000 USTA Challenger on Nov. 14 at Atkins Tennis Center. 

Petrov defeated the United States’ Alfredo Perez in a three set battle, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (2), while Kovacevic took his victory against Alafia Ayeni, 7-5, 7-5. 

Freshman Kenta Miyoshi lost his match to Spain’s Inaki Montes-De La Torre, 6-1, 6-3. Illinois alumnus Zeke Clark also dropped his match, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Germany’s Sebastian Fanselow. 

On Tuesday, Petrov is set to face United States’ Keegan Smith, sophomore Mathis Debru will play Ethan Quinn and Karlis Ozolins will square off with Ben Shelton at 10 a.m. Following these matches, former Illini Aleks Vukic will play Great Britain’s Aidan McHugh and junior Hunter Heck will play Steve Johnson of the United States.
