RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off its highest final ITA ranking in program history last season, the NC State men’s tennis team was well represented in the Preseason ITA Rankings for the upcoming 2022-23 season. The Pack had a pair of doubles teams ranked among the top-30 nationally, and three individuals were ranked among the top-125, including a pair in the top-70.
The top ranking was the doubles team of senior Robin Catry and junior Luca Staeheli, as the duo was ranked No. 26 nationally to start the season. Last season, the pair recorded three ranked wins including downing the 13th ranked doubles squad from South Carolina.
Not far behind, at No. 29, was the doubles team of senior Martins Rocens and sophomore Fons Van Sambeek. The duo defeated the 8th ranked doubles team from North Carolina during the season, and earned ACC Doubles Team of the Week.
In the individual rankings which went up to No. 125, the Pack had three players honored.
Fifth-year veteran Rafa Izquierdo Luque was the highest ranked, checking in at No. 60 nationally. Last season, he competed exclusively at No. 1 singles for the Pack, and racked up five ranked singles wins and earned second-team All-ACC honors.
Catry was closed behind, as he was ranked No. 70. He also earned second-team All-ACC honors last season, as he led the Pack with 21 singles wins last season. His doubles teammate Staeheli was the final member of the Pack ranked, No. 119. He was the 2022 ACC Freshman of the Year and ITA Carolina Rookie of the Year as he went 6-1 vs. ACC foes in singles action.
