Ozolins Advances to Round of 16 in NCAA Singles Tournament

STILLWATER, Okla. – Illinois men’s tennis junior Karlis Ozolins will be playing in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Tournament after a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc in the Round of 32 on the campus of Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon.

This is the first time that an Illini has reached the Round of 16 since 2021, when professional tennis player Aleks Kovacevic defeated Alexis Galarneau, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

After dropping the first set, Ozolins came back on fire in the second set, not letting Cornut-Chauvinc score a point until the second game.

Ozolins never fell behind in the second set, and he kept the Florida State Seminole within one point for the entirety of the match.

Ozolins will play Wednesday against either SMU’s Trevor Svajda or Arizona State’s Murphy Cassone. The time will be announced on Tuesday night.

The junior will also be playing with doubles partner Hunter Heck on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT against Sebastian Dominko and Jean-Marc Malkowski of Notre Dame in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Follow live here.
