Carl Emil Overbeck had some impressive results at this year’s ITA All-American Championships.

TULSA, Okla./BERKELEY – On Friday morning, before the ITA Northwest Regional Championships began in Berkeley, California men’s tennis junior Carl Emil Overbeck pushed Columbia’s Max Westphal in a taut, three-set match in the consolation round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships. But in the end the Golden Bear fell to the 62nd-ranked Lion, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.

This season marked the first time that Overbeck reached the ITA All-American main draw. The product of Copenhagen, Denmark, posted three wins in qualifying singles – including a victory over Princeton’s 73rd-ranked Top Nidunjianzan. Also in qualifying singles, Overbeck was leading Baylor’s 72nd-ranked Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, 7-5, 2-1, when the latter retired with an injury.

“His belief has improved a lot,” said Kris Kwinta, Cal’s Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis. “He played some guys higher ranked and didn’t look intimidated at all. He played his game and executed well.”

Earlier in the tournament, several other Golden Bears, including freshmen Jonathan Irwanto and Tim Stepanov and juniors Alex Chang and Derrick Chen, played in the All-American pre-qualifying draws.

“It was a good showing by Jonathan Irwanto, who won three matches,” Kwinta said. “He showed a lot of promise. So did Alex Chang, who won twice. Most of them discovered what they need to do to get better, to train better and to be competitive at this level. You always want to win, but with each match, win or lose, you keep growing and discovering what’s missing in your game. We saw some good matches by Tim. He didn’t get a win, but he made a decent showing. Derek unfortunately had an injury but will be back stronger.”

Several Bears are now competing in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Cal. The results from the first day of competition are forthcoming. On the second day of the event on Saturday, matches begin at 9 a.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
