Carl Emil Overbeck captured one of two finals he played in as the regional championships came to a close Tuesday in Seattle.
SEATTLE – The California men’s tennis team capped a strong overall performance Tuesday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, with Carl Emil Overbeck capturing the singles title and Overbeck and Theo Dean finishing as the doubles runners-up at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Overbeck – seeded third and ranked 56th – defeated Washington’s seventh-seeded and 108th-ranked Cesar Bouchelaghem 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the singles final. On Monday, in winning his semifinal match against Cal teammate Alex Chang, Overbeck earned a berth in the NCAA Singles Championship, slated for Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
Third-seeded and 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck would have garnered a berth in the NCAA Doubles Championship with a win in the regional doubles final Tuesday. But the Golden Bears fell to Stanford’s 32nd-ranked and fourth-seeded Samir Banerjee and Nico Godsick 7-5, 6-1 in the title match.
Along with putting three Bears in the singles semifinals, Cal had three pairs reach the doubles quarterfinals, including second-seeded and 13th-ranked Chang and Mikey Wright and the duo of Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov.
