Ong, Vagramov Claim Doubles Title at Kramer

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women’s tennis team completed the fall portion of its 2022-23 season at a pair of tournaments in Southern California Sunday, with Vanessa Ong and Sasha Vagramov turning in the Bruins’ second championship performance of the campaign.

Ong and Vagramov captured the Dennis Rizza Classic doubles title at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., while Vagramov also made the singles semifinal round. Four Bruins in all were in the field. Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle competed at the ITA National Fall Championships, where the pair earned a doubles win.

The tandem of Ong and Vagramov won four matches in three days, not relinquishing more than two games in the first-to-eight format until the final. In the semifinals, the Bruins defeated the top-seeded team of Loyola Marymount’s Sofia Munera and Stefania Rogozinska-Dzik by an 8-2 margin. Then, in the final, Ong and Vagramov outlasted Carolyn Campana and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat of Pepperdine 8-7(1).

Ong, Vagramov and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer each prevailed in the first round of singles action, with Lutkemeyer ultimately advancing to the quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set victories. Vagramov went one step further, defeating the 36th-ranked Thamchaiwat 6-4, 6-3 for her second win versus a nationally-ranked counterpart this season.

Barnes Tennis Center hosted the final national event of the fall, which Hance and Wagle reached with standout showings at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in October. The pair, owner of the region’s doubles title, notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory versus Erin Richardson and Makenna Thiel of California in the first round of Fall Nats play. The Bruins’ time would end one round later at the hands of Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar of Maryland.

Hance also took part in the singles tournament thanks to her runner-up finish at Regionals. After falling to No. 56 Elaine Chervinsky of Virginia in the opening round of main-draw competition, No. 98 Hance bounced back to defeat No. 105 Angelica Blake of Stanford 6-1, 6-1 in a consolation match.
