Octa Advances to Singles B Draw Final at ITA Central Regional Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Missouri tennis closes day three of tournament play on Friday, Oct. 11, at the ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted by University of Memphis at the Leftwich Tennis Center. 

Opening the day with round of 32 doubles competition in the main draw, graduate student Lailaa Bashir and freshman Gian Octa fell to University of Tulsa’s Lily Hutchings and Maria Berlanga, 8-1. 

The day continued with singles play, with senior Inah Canete advancing to the round of 16 in the main draw after her opponent withdrew. Battling hard, the senior faced off against Berlanga of Tulsa and could not hold on, falling 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Sarah Hartel played a close match against Loles Chova Carbo of Arkansas State University but narrowly dropped, 6-1, 65-77, (12-10), in the quarterfinals of B draw singles play. After advancing in the B draw singles competition due to injury withdrawal, Octa walked away with her fourth win of the weekend against Sati Aubakirova of Wichita State University in the semifinals, grabbing the victory in the tiebreak, 6-0, 6-7, (10-8).

UP NEXT

Octa will face off against University of Minnesota’s Deniz Turan in the finals of the B-Draw singles competition. The match is slated for 9 a.m on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Leftwich Tennis with Center. Canete, Hartel, Bashir are also slated to pick up extra singles matches at 10 a.m.
