Northwestern Set to Open NCAA Tournament Play against UCLA


EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men’s tennis will make its 19th appearance in NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 5 when it squares off with UCLA in the First Round at Boone Tennis Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

The berth marks the third straight for the Wildcats, who are looking to advance to the Second Round for the third straight year.

The ‘Cats defeated UCLA in the First Round in 2021 in the Austin Regional. Current Wildcats Simen Bratholm, Steven Forman, Trice Pickens, Natan Spear, and Presley Thieneman appeared in the 4-1 win over the Bruins.

2023 marks the second consecutive year Northwestern has landed in the Lexington Regional. In 2022, the Wildcats defeated ETSU 4-0 in the First Round before falling 4-2 to eventual national runner-up Kentucky.

UCLA ranks 35th in the May 4 ITA Team Rankings. The doubles pairing of Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli ranks 56th nationally. The Bruins enter NCAA Tournament play at 12-10, going 3-5 in Pac-12 play and falling to Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament Quarterfinals.

The winner of Northwestern’s First Round Match with UCLA will advance to the Second Round to face the winner of the First Round match between Kentucky and Presbyterian at Noon CT on Saturday.

Friday, May 5 –

Match One: Northwestern vs. UCLA – 9 a.m. CT

Match Two: No. 4 Kentucky vs. Presbyterian  –  12 p.m. CT

Saturday, May 6 –

Match Three: Winner of Match One vs. Winner of Match Two – 12 p.m. CT
