Northwestern Back Home On Sunday To Host Kansas State

EVANSTON, Ill. (February 16, 2023) – After playing three of its last four matches away from home, Northwestern women’s tennis (3-4) returns to the friendly confines of the Combe Tennis Center on Sunday, February 20 to entertain Kansas State at 12 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Host Notre Dame jumped in front early and never looked back, dealing the Wildcats a 6-1 defeat last Saturday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind.

Briana Crowley accounted for the ‘Cats lone point of the day during singles action, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Akari Matsuno.  A winner in two of her last three matches, Crowley holds a team-best 5-2 record on the young season.

The pairing of Christina Hand and Justine Leong continued their impressive run of form in doubles play.  Currently ranked No. 46 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Hand and Leong coasted to a 6-1 triumph against the Fighting Irish’s Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman en route to improving to 6-1 as a duo.

LOOKING AHEAD
Kansas State finds itself mired in a five-match skid, most recently dropping a 4-3 decision on the road at Tulsa last Sunday.

Piloted by fifth-year head coach Jordan Smith, the Wildcats, who visit DePaul on Friday evening, are in the midst of a stretch that sees them play 10 consecutive matches on the road to begin their 2023 slate.

Northwestern and Kansas State will battle for the seventh time on Sunday, a series in which the ‘Cats hold a 5-1 (.833) edge in six previous encounters.  The two teams met last season in Manhattan, Kan., with Northwestern winning a 4-2 decision.
