Sunday’s match was a back-and-forth affair before the eighth-ranked Gamecocks eventually claimed the win over the 12th-ranked Tar Heels.
Carolina used doubles wins from Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay at No. 2 and Will Jansen and Karl Poling at No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead to start the day.
After winning the doubles point for the ninth time in 11 matches this season, the teams traded singles wins. UNC got victories from Peter Murphy at No. 6 and Poling at No. 4.
Eventually, South Carolina’s Casey Hoole took a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Anuj Watane in the clinching match at No. 5 singles.
South Carolina grabbed singles wins by Toby Samuel at No. 1 over Cernoch, Connor Thomson at No. 2 over Ryan Seggerman and No. 3 by Rafael Lambling at No. 3 over Jansen.
The Tar Heels will return to action in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Sunday February 26 against Boston College. The Tar Heels and Eagles will meet at noon in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
