LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 ranked USC men’s tennis (3-0) won its ITA Kickoff Weekend Regional Championship and picked up its 17th straight trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships after a 4-3 victory over San Diego (1-1) on Sunday, January 28th at Marks Tennis Stadium.
Freshman Volodymyr Iakubenko and graduate student Samuel Rubell started the Trojans off with a 6-3 doubles win. Graduate student Sefan Dostanic and Sophomore Oscar Weightman had a decisive 6-4 doubles win after they were down by four games before their six-game win streak, clinching the doubles point for the Trojans. Dostanic and Weightman are now 2-0 as a double squad.
#39 Junior Peter Makk was the first to finish up his singles match. He breezed through it from No. 2 singles spot, as he faced #31 Iiro Vasa, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
#73 Lodewijk Weststrate defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
USC’s Iakubenko clinched the match, as he won from the No. 5 singles spot 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. This is the second-straight time that Iakubenko has clinched it for the Trojans, as he was the decider in the first match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend against SMU.
USC men’s tennis punched their ticket to the ITA National Indoor championship on Friday, February 16th, hosted by Columbia University in New York City.
