The No. 6 USC men’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday (Feb. 13) as the Trojans fell 4-1 to No. 4 Michigan on the road. With the loss USC falls to 6-1 while Michigan improves to 10-0.
The Wolverines jumped ahead and never let up as they swiftly claimed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. First No. 6 Fenty/Young defeated USC’s Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate with a 6-2 decision on court two. A few moments later, the Trojan duo of Samuel Rubell and Wojtek Marek would fall 6-4 to Cooksey/Bickersteth (Michigan) on court three. With the win, Michigan hauled in the doubles point.
Michigan struck first in singles, capturing a win on court five as Ryan Colby fell 6-3, 6-2 to Wolverine Jacob Bickersteth. Trojan Lodewijk Weststrate put the first and only point on the board for the Troy, defeating Bjorn Swenson (Michigan) 6-2, 6-0. The following two matches went in favor of the Wolverines, with Bradley Frye and Wojtek Marek falling on courts four and three, respectively. The remaining matches were abandoned.
Next USC will head to Chicago for the men’s Division I ITA National Team Indoor Championship beginning Friday, Feb. 17. Seeds and opponents will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
