No. 43 Women’s Tennis Defeats JMU and Duquesne in Doubleheader

UNIVERISTY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s tennis team (8-5) collected a 4-1 win over James Madison (4-4) and tallied a 6-1 victory over Duquesne (4-3). 
 
JMU
 
DOUBLES 
 
The James Madison women’s tennis struck first and took the doubles point. Karly Friedland and Olivia Dorner fell in their match 6-3 against Daria Afanasyeva and Alexandra Prudente at the No. 3 position. 
 
At No. 2, Ioana Gheorghita and Alexandra Nielsen competed versus Daria Munteanu/Daniela Voloh. The pair lost their match, 6-3, to give JMU the doubles point. 
 
At No. 1 doubles, Sofiya Chekhlystova and Carla Girbau were leading Ines Oliveria and Kylie Moulin, 5-4, before the match was stopped. 
 
SINGLES 

The Nittany Lions won four singles matches to tally the win over James Madison. No. 42 Sofiya Chekhlystova started out the singles wins for the Blue and White at the No. 1 position. She defeated Kylie Mouin 6-0, 6-4. 

 

Ioana Gheorghita added the second singles point for Penn State. At the No. 3 position, Gheorghita defeated Ines Oliveira, 6-4, 6-2. 

 

At No. 4, Olivia Dorner won a hard-fought match versus Daniela Voloh, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Yvonne Zuffova clinched the match for the Nittany Lions with a comeback win over Daria Afanasyeva, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

 

Alexandra Nielsen was leading Hope Moulin 6-3 going into the second set, when the match was stopped. Karly Friedland was tied 1-1 in the second set after falling 6-3 in the opening frame.
