Carl Emil Overbeck clinched a Cal win for the fourth time this season on Friday in Eugene.
EUGENE, Ore. – The 28th-ranked California men’s tennis team survived a nailbiter on Friday, as the Golden Bears edged No. 55 Oregon, 4-3, at the Student Tennis Center. Golden Bear sophomore Carl Emil Overbeck defeated Ivailo Keremedchiev to secure the victory with his fourth clinching win of the season.
Cal improved to 12-8 (4-3 Pac-12) after the penultimate match of the regular season. Oregon has a record of 12-12 (1-6).
The Bears took a 1-0 lead after doubles. The Cal pair of Philip Hjorth and Derrick Chen beat Vlad Breazu and Luke Vandecasteele, 6-3, on court three, and then the 88th-ranked Overbeck and Yuta Kikuchi defeated Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele, 7-5, on court one to clinch the doubles point.
Cal won first in singles to tie the match to take a 2-0 lead, with Hjorth besting Breazu, 6-3, 6-3, on court six. After a Duck won on court six, Cal’s 30th-ranked Kikuchi prevailed over Charlton on court one, 7-5, 6-3, to hand the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Oregon won next on court three and then took a three-setter on court two to tie the match, 3-3.
Court four decided the contest when Overbeck beat Breazu, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5, to send Cal away with the win.
The Bears next play on Sunday at noon, when they take on 56th-ranked Washington in Seattle to end the regular season.
