No. 25 Women’s Tennis Opens Conference Play At USC And UCLA

SEATTLE – The No. 25 Husky women’s tennis team will kick off Pac-12 action this weekend as the Dawgs head to Los Angeles to take on USC and UCLA.
 
The Huskies will first face USC (8-4) on Friday, March 8 and UCLA (5-3) on Saturday, March 9 at noon. Both LA teams are ranked in the top 20, with Southern California at No. 11 and UCLA at No. 19.
 
The Dawgs defeated both USC and UCLA in conference play last season – the second time in UW program history that the Huskies have swept the Southern California schools, and the first time since 2003.
 
UW beat UCLA twice in 2023, the second time being in the first round of Pac-12s with a 4-0 sweep – the fifth win over UCLA all time.
 
Washington currently has one singles player and one doubles duo in the rankings. Alexia Jacobs moved up 11 spots to No. 67 after defeating an Illinois opponent 6-2, 6-1 and then beating then-No. 9 Ohio State’s 68^th-ranked Ratliff 6-3, 6-2 last weekend.
 
Jacobs and Astrid Olsen are 55^th in the doubles rankings, as the pair is 6-3 at No. 1 doubles so far this year.
 
THE COMPETITION – NO. 11 USC
 
Washington faced USC (8-4) once earlier this season at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships where the Trojans snagged the close matchup, 4-3.
 
Erika Matsuda defeated then-No. 52 Snow Han and Jacobs defeated then-No. 20 Emma Charney from Southern California at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to give the Huskies two ranked singles wins. The third point for the Dawgs came on a court 6 win by Dariya Detkovskaya.
 
USC’s Charney is now ranked No. 31 and she is joined by teammates Grace Piper (No. 51), Snow Han (No. 88) and Eryn Cayetano (No. 113) in the singles rankings.
 
The Trojans’ Cayetano/Charney are 11^th nationally in doubles, along with Piper and Parker Fry at No. 36. Matsuda and Sarah-Maude Fortin took down the pair on Feb. 10 at No. 2 doubles, 6-2.
 
THE COMPETITION – NO. 19 UCLA
 
The 19^th ranked Bruins (5-3) have three singles players in the rankings – No. 62 Fangran Tian, No. 65 Bianca Jolie Fernandez and No. 91 Kimmi Hance. The doubles pair of Ahmani Guichard and Alexandra Vagramov are 66^th in the country.
