No. 25 Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 7 USC in Kickoff Weekend Final

Portland

LOS ANGELES – The No. 25 UCLA men’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 7 USC Sunday in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.

With Patrick Zahraj of the Bruins (3-1) nearing a win of his own, Ryan Colby clinched the overall victory on Court 6. Peter Makk and Wojtek Marek also prevailed in singles play for the Trojans (4-0), who advanced to February’s ITA National Team Indoor Championship event with the win.

UCLA defeated Memphis 4-0 Saturday to claim a spot in the championship contest. Memphis beat Vanderbilt 4-3 in Sunday’s consolation match.

The 12th-ranked pair of Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye registered a 6-0 victory versus Zahraj and Giacomo Revelli to give USC an early advantage in doubles play. The loss represents the first of 2022-23 for the duo of Revelli and Zahraj. Then, with the Court 2 matchup a back-and-forth affair, Marek and Samuel Rubell held off Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.

No. 89 Revelli, who sealed the first-round win in a second-set tiebreaker, fell 6-2, 6-2 at the hands of No. 38 Makk on Court 2. Marek then outlasted Tripathi 6-3, 6-4 on Court 4. The final result was ultimately sealed by Colby on Court 6, where he outlasted Timothy Li 6-4, 7-6(4).

The Bruins return to action Saturday, Feb. 4, when they welcome Portland to Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
