No. 24 Women’s Tennis Prepares for Top-25 Showdown in San Diego


TEMPE, Ariz. – After a two-match road trip to Ohio, No. 24 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis (4-1) will be on the road again as they’ll travel to San Diego for a matchup with the No. 20 San Diego Toreros (Sunday, February 4, 3 p.m. AZT).

SUN DEVIL NOTABLES

  • Arizona State is ranked No. 24 in this week’s ITA Team rankings. Their match with the No. 20 Toreros is the second match in a row where they will face a ranked opponent. 
  • The Sun Devils are coming off competition at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus, Ohio in a bracket comprised of No. 13 Ohio State, Kansas and Notre Dame. The Sun Devils defeated Kansas, 4-2, on Friday and were bested by Ohio State, 4-0, the following afternoon.
  • Senior Marianna Argyrokastriti plays primarily in the No. 3 spot for singles this year and is 4-0 to begin the season. Argyrokastriti is tied with fellow senior Giulia Morlet with the most singles wins so far this season (4).
  • The duo of Patricija Spaka/Chelsea Fontenel leads the team in most doubles wins to begin the season with three playing on Court 1.
  • Two Sun Devils have earned national individual rankings in the ITA preseason polls– Morlet (No. 61) and freshman Emilija Tverijoanite (No. 68). 

PREVIEWING SAN DIEGO (2-2)

  • The Toreros upset then-No. 2 Stanford on January 13 in their second match of the season. They are also coming off competition at the ITA Kickoff Weekend where they traveled to Gainesville where they defeated Wake Forest but fell to No. 8 Florida, 4-3, in the championship match.
  • In the ITA Top 125 individual rankings, Mia Mack of the Toreros is ranked No. 89 in the nation. 
  • The Sun Devils have faced the Toreros in each of the last three seasons and are perfect against San Diego in their past eight meetings. The maroon and gold hosted the Toreros at Whiteman Tennis Center on February 4, 2023, where they picked up a 5-2 victory.
  • USD is led by second-year head coach Nadia Abdala, who played for the Sun Devils from 2006 to 2010. Before being named head coach, Abdala was an assistant coach with the Toreros for eight seasons and is a three-time ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
