No. 23 Sun Devils Cruise Past SMU For Third Straight Win

TEMPE – The No. 23 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis team defeated the SMU Mustangs, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center to advance to 8-1 on the season. 

After going down a set in doubles, Marianna Argyrokastriti and Chelsea Fontenel battled back in a close match and ultimately came out victorious to tie it up, 1-1, for the Sun Devils. Giulia Morlet and Sedona Gallagher rallied together and won their match 6-4 to secure the doubles point for ASU, putting the Sun Devils in the lead 1-0.

Gallagher took the first singles point in commanding fashion, sweeping her opponent and putting ASU up 2-0. Argyrokastriti handily defeated her opponent, 6-1, 6-1, to put the Sun Devils up 3-0. Then, Chelsea Fontenel clinched the win for the Sun Devils, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-4, and giving Arizona State the victory, 4-0. The freshman is tied with Argyrokastriti for the team-high in singles wins this season (8).

The Sun Devils are currently riding a three-match winning streak, their second longest of the early season. They’re also a perfect 7-0 at home this season.
