No. 2 Seed Cal Opens Pac-12 Championship

BERKELEY – The 26th-ranked California women’s tennis team opens the Pac-12 Championship in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Ojai, where the Golden Bears face the winner of Wednesday’s Oregon-Colorado match. Cal finished second in the conference standings with a 7-3 record to claim the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, while 58th-ranked Oregon is the No. 7 seed and 63rd-ranked Colorado is seeded 10th. The Bears’ opener will take place at Weil Tennis Academy.
 
The winner of the conference tournament earns the Pac-12’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
 
Cal brings an overall record of 11-8 into the meeting with the Ducks (11-9) or Buffaloes (11-11).

Poll Position
In Tuesday’s latest rankings, Cal moved to No. 26 in the team poll. The sophomore tandem of Katja Wiersholm and Jessica Alsola (16-11) now sits at No. 12 in the doubles rankings. Two Bears are ranked in singles in No. 55 Alsola (27-4) – who had an 18-match winning streak snapped in a recent loss to Stanford – and No. 105 Haley Giavara (9-12), who won in singles in perhaps her final match against the Cardinal (see below).
 
Cal Falls In Big Slam
Cal senior Haley Giavara won in singles in her final Big Slam, but then-No. 27 Cal lost to seventh-ranked Stanford, 6-1, on Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Center on The Farm. Giavara claimed the first win in singles, beating the 16th-ranked Connie Ma, 6-4, 6-1, to tie the Big Slam at 1-1, but the Cardinal captured the rest of the singles matches to take the regular-season finale.
 
Last Time Vs. Oregon
Then-No. 37 Cal defeated No. 43 Oregon, 6-1, on April 9 in Eugene, Oregon, with Katja Wiersholm clinching the victory and Jessica Alsola capturing her 15th consecutive singles win. Wiersholm won 6-2, 6-3 over Myah Petchey to clinch, while Alsola, ranked 43rd, posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sophie Luescher.
