BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Texas A&M women’s tennis team claimed eight Southeastern Conference postseason awards, the league announced Thursday morning. The Aggies led the SEC in total honors, following a regular season conference title and trip to the conference tournament final.
Head coach Mark Weaver led Texas A&M to its second straight undefeated regular season SEC title, while also reaching its third-straight conference tournament final. Weaver’s leadership did not go unnoticed by his fellow head coaches around the conference, as he was awarded co-SEC Coach of the Year, his second straight SEC Coach of the Year award. This was the first time in the last five years a coach has won the award back-to-back, and Weaver remains the only A&M head coach to receive the honor.
Following a stellar sophomore year Mary Stoiana was named SEC Player of the Year, marking the first time an Aggie has won the award. She reached and maintained the heights of No. 2 in the nation in singles this season, the highest singles ranking in program history. Stoiana also held three separate doubles rankings, with the highest being No. 3 in the nation with Carson Branstine. She was the only player in the conference to boast an undefeated record in regular season action in both singles (11-0) and doubles (11-0). Her performances earned her a conference record seven SEC Player of the Week honors, bringing her career total to 11, the most for any player in conference history through two seasons.
Stoiana also landed herself on the All-SEC First Team for her performances. Branstine joined her on the First Team as the pair were the highest ranked doubles team in the conference at No. 3 in the nation, the pair went undefeated all season boasting a 9-0 record.
The Maroon & White had three members of the squad named to the All-SEC Second Team in Jayci Goldsmith, Salma Ewing and Mia Kupres. Goldsmith once again played an integral part in the Aggies success this season, she has now been named to four All-Conference teams throughout her five seasons in Aggieland. The graduate holds a regular season conference singles and doubles record of 11-2. Ewing joined the program from USC this January, making an instant impact in conference play. She stepped in to play court 2 singles, where she was 9-4 in conference singles matches and 11-2 in doubles matches…
