No. 18 Bulldogs Edged By Ole Miss, 4-3

OXFORD – No. 18 Mississippi State suffered its first Southeastern Conference loss of the season on Saturday, falling at 59^th-ranked Ole Miss 4-3.

The Bulldogs (12-2, 1-1 SEC) split their singles matches but dropped the earlier doubles point, which ultimately proved to be the difference.

Ewen Lumsden and Gregor Ramskogler made short work of their singles matches to give MSU a brief 2-1 advantage. Lumsden was the first off the court with his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lukas Engelhardt followed by Ramskogler’s win against reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Isac Stromberg 6-4, 6-3.

No. 113 Carles Hernandez also earned a victory moments after the Rebels clinched the match. Hernandez downed Simon Junk 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Ole Miss (9-2, 1-0 SEC) evened the match 2-2 as No. 68 Nikola Slavic defeated Nemanja Malesevic 7-5, 6-2 and took the lead when Noah Schlagenhauf rallied past Benito Sanchez Martinez 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. John Hallquist Lithen clinched things for the Rebels in a third-set tiebreaker with 107^th-ranked Petar Jovanovic 6-0, 6-7(1), 7-6(4).

Ole Miss also claimed the doubles point to start the day as Hallquist Lithen and Junk edged Jovanovic and Ramskogler 6-4 and Slavic and Engelhardt upset the 33^rd-ranked tandem of Hernandez and Malesevic 6-3.

The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak for State. The Bulldogs return home to take on No. 14 Auburn on Thursday at 3 p.m.
