No. 17 Tennessee Falls in ITA Kickoff Weekend Regional Championship to No. 18 USC, 4-2


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 17 Tennessee women’s tennis team came up short in a 4-2 defeat against No. 18 USC on Saturday at Goodfriend Tennis Center. The squad was one match short of advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Washington, on Feb. 8-11. 

The Big Orange opened the match by acquiring the doubles point against the Trojans. Senior Lauren Anzalotta and sophomore Catherine Aulia landed the first 7-5 victory against Lily Fairclough and Naomi Cheong. Senior Esther Adeshina and graduate student Alana Wolfberg, clinched the doubles point 6-6,(7-4) over No. 29 Parker Fry and Grace Piper.

After landing the doubles point, only one of Tennessee’s singles would go on to secure a win. 

Singles play opened with, No. 115 Elza Tomase dropping her match against No. 83 Eryn Cayetano in a 2-6, 3-6 result. Sophomore Leyla Britez Risso also fell short against Immi Haddad, 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 in the six spot. 

No. 91 Wolfberg captured Tennessee’s only singles win against No. 42 Naomi Cheong in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 advantage.

On court five, Anzalotta was downed by No. 66 Grace Piper in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 result. Catherine Aulia tallied the final loss of the match to No. 22 Emma Charney in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 beating.

UP NEXT:

The Lady Vols will continue their homestead, hosting NC State on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
