No. 17 Florida State Defeats No. 55 Clemson 4-0

TALLAHASSEE – The No. 17 Florida State men’s tennis team defeated No. 55 Clemson 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

“It was great getting a shutout today,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. The doubles were outstanding, I thought we played really well at all three positions”. I was excited how we closed the doubles out in convincing fashion.

Florida State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after it won the doubles point. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif  gave FSU its first doubles win after their 6-2 win on court No. 2, and then Maks Silagy and Barnaby Smith’s 6-2 victory on court No. 3 clinched the doubles point for the Seminoles.

Jaime Connel earned the first singles point for Florida State after his opponent retired on court No. 5. Connel had won eight straight points to begin the match, winning the first set 6-0 and leading 2-0 in the second set before the point was conceded.

On court No. 1 Cornut-Chauvinc won three straight games to win 6-4 in the first set. Cornut-Chauvinc’s 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory gave Florida State its third point of the afternoon.

The match was clinched on court No. 3 by DousKarpenschif with his 6-4, 6-4 victory giving the Seminoles a 4-0 win.

Alex Bulte played at No. 6, winning his first set 6-2, and was leading 5-4 in the second set when the match concluded.

“It was great to get Alex in the singles lineup and to see him only a couple points away from winning,” Hultquist said. “Jaime has been coming around and is really starting to dominate matches. Antoine and Josh closing it out in straight sets also really helped us pull away today”.

Florida State is now 14-5 on the season and 6-2 in the ACC. The Seminoles host in-state rival Miami on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Admission to home matches is free. Live stats and live video will be available on Seminoles.com.
