No. 15 Spartans Cruise to Sweep of Liberty to Kick Off Diablo Invite


TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 15 Michigan State swept No. 51 Liberty to kick off the Diablo College Tennis Invitational Friday, victorious by a score of 4-0 to get back in the win column and improve to 13-1 on the season.
 
The Spartans jumped to an early 1-0 lead by way of the doubles point as graduate student Ronald Hohmann III and freshman Aristotelis Thanos and combined for a 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and junior Max Sheldon and senior Graydon Lair paired for a 6-1 win on court three.
 
In singles play, three straight-set wins clinched the victory for MSU. First it was sophomore David Saye, victorious 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Hohmann followed with his team-leading eighth win of the season, 6-2, 6-2 on court one.
 
The Greek national Thanos clinched the match for the Spartans in his first appearance for the Spartans since Feb. 17, winning 6-2, 6-2 to seal the Spartans’ advance to the tournament semifinals.
 
The Spartans will face the winner of Friday night’s matchup between No. 23 Arizona State and No. 58 Boise State for a shot at the Spartans’ second tournament final in as many weeks. The semifinal will take place at either 3 p.m. or 7 p.m. Eastern Saturday.
