Nirundorn, Tokac Earn Quartefinals Spot at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Gators’ pair of Tanapatt Nirundorn and Togan Tokac keep on rolling through the doubles main draw of the ITA All-American Championships as the freshmen advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Nirundorn and Tokac tallied their fourth ranked win of the tournament and their fifth overall by defeating the No. 3 ranked duo of Sander Jong and Lui Maxted from TCU in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. The Florida freshmen opened the first set with a 3-0 lead to distance themselves the rest of the way for a 6-3, first set advantage. The Gators outlasted the Horned Frogs in the second frame as Nirudorn and Tokac converted on a break point opportunity to go up 6-5 and Tokac served for the match to win 7-5.

Nirundorn and Tokac will next play No. 25 ranked Noah Schachter and Trey Hilderbrand from Texas A&M.

An incredible journey from pre-qualifying came to an end for Jonah Braswell after eight straight wins to reach the round of 32. The freshman squared off with No. 7 ranked Chris Rodesch from Virginia and won two straight games to go up 3-1 in the first set, but Rodesch won three straight games to win the frame, 6-4. The Sarasota, Fla. native went on to lose the second set, 6-1.

The eight-match win streak in singles by Braswell were the most to begin a fall season since Duarte Vale won his first 13 matches in 2019. Also, the eight victories were the most by a Gator at the ITA All-American Championships since Ben Shelton won six in a row to be crowned the 2021 champion at last year’s event. The eight wins to begin Braswell’s collegiate career were the most by a Florida freshman since Johannes Ingildsen started his freshman season with eight consecutive wins in 2017.

No. 34 Axel Nefve fought hard, but came up short in the round of 32. The graduate student faced Ohio State’s Alexander Bernard and was faced with an early deficit in the first set, 6-4. The Delray Beach, Fla. native showed resiliency in an efficient 6-2 second set to force a final third set decider. Nefve was able to convert one break point opportunity to go up 3-1, but Bernard responded with winning four straight games. Nefve won one more game to pressure Bernard to serve for the match at 5-4, but the Ohio State freshman closed it out, 6-4.
