RALEIGH Four members of the NC State men’s tennis team start singles and doubles championship action this week in Orlando.

The NCAA tennis championships begin Monday at the USTA National Campus (May 22-27).

Senior Rafa Izquierdo Luque will begin singles play on Monday. Doubles action starts Tuesday with Izquierdo and Joe Wayand and Luca Staeheli and Robin Catry

“I think it’s good, especially for the returners, that they get to experience that final site,” NC State head coach Kyle Spencer said. “The other thing is we’ve always, in our six years here, been good in doubles and we’ve never put a team in, so to have two teams is, it all came at once.”

Last time out: As a team, No. 25 NC State fell to Oklahoma, 4-2, in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli defeated Alex Martinez and Justin Schlageter 6-2, helping the Pack earn the doubles point.

Pack in the rankings: In the May 4 ITA rankings, Catry and Staeheli were ranked No. 11 in the country. Joe Wayand and Rafa Izquierdo Luque were ranked No. 14. Izquierdo Luque was ranked No. 57.

NCAA history: NC State hasn’t sent a doubles team to the NCAA championships since 2014 (Ian Dempster/Robbie Mudge). This is the eighth time a doubles duo has made the NCAA championships. It’s the first time in two years the Pack had a singles player make the NCAA field. It’s the 13th time in school history an NC State player made the NCAA singles championship. It’s the first time since 2014 the school was represented in both the doubles and singles.
