The 45-year-old Marcaccio, a Buenos Aires native, reached a career-high ranking of No. 284 in 2004.
“Hello everyone. I want to inform you of the joining of Gustavo Marcaccio (🇦🇷) to the technical team,” Nadal announced in an Instagram post. “Gustavo has been working at the @rafanadalacademy since April 2021 and I understand he is a good addition to the team.
“It sure will help us a lot to stay on the way. Welcome Gustavo!”
Former world No. 1 Carlos Moya remains Nadal’s primary coach. Marc Lopez, who partnered Nadal to the Olympic doubles gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, also remains a part of the second-ranked Spaniard’s coaching team. Nadal posted this image of his complete coaching team (left to right): Marc Lopez, Gustavo Marcaccio and Carlos Moya.
The coaching addition comes a couple of days after long-time coach Francisco Roig officially departed Nadal’s staff.
The king of clay did not face Marcaccio when their time on the ATP Tour overlapped. However former world No. 1 Moya met Marcaccio once on Tour scoring a 6-1, 7-5 win in the 2006 Estoril Open round of 16.
Nadal will launch defense of his Australian Open championship in Melbourne next month.
The Australian Open starts on January 16, 2023.
