Murray on GOAT – More Nuanced than Just Slams

Speaking with Sky Sports ahead of his 15th appearance at Wimbledon, two-time champion Andy Murray reflected on Novak Djokovic’s 23rd major title and what it means for the GOAT debate.

“There’s definitely arguments there for him to be the greatest of all time,” Murray said.

The 36-year-old Scot, currently ranked 39, owns 29 combined wins against the Big Three. He sports a record of 11-25 against Djokovic, 11-14 against Federer and 7-17 against Nadal.

Murray says that each player has carved out a unique brand of greatness on their own specific surfaces.

“The thing that for me has been really special about those three guys is their [ability to dominate certain] surfaces. Rafa on the clay, I don’t think anyone can doubt who’s the best clay court player of all time. For me, Novak is clearly the best hard court player of all time and then grass is kind of still to be decided, between probably [Novak] and Roger. “But yeah, what all those guys have achieved is amazing.”

With Djokovic now on top of the all-time men’s singles title list for the first time, Murray still refrains from making any kind of definitive declaration when it comes to which of the three legends is the greatest of all-time.

“If you just go on Grand Slam titles, then you’d have to give that to Novak but for me, it’s just slightly more nuanced than that.”
