Murphy Reaches Fourth Round at ITA Northwest Regionals


STANFORD, Calif. (October 15, 2022) – Washington State sophomore Maxine Murphy advanced to the fourth round before falling in the Round of 16 at the 2022 ITA Northwest Regionals Saturday at the Taube Tennis Courts on the Stanford campus.
 
Murphy opened the day with a 7-6 (6) 6-2 win over San Francisco’s Hana Gamracy in the third round to reach of the Round of 16. There she faced Yinglak Jittakoat and after a first-set tiebreaker, drew no closer as Jittakoat closed out a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win.
 
Freshman Yura Nakagawa was the other Cougar to reach the third round, falling to Pacific’s Tomi Main, 6-2, 6-3.
 
In consolation play, sophomore Elyse Tse rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) win over San Francisco’s Chiho Mushika while sophomore Stefaniia Mikhailova needed three sets to defeat Maddie Egan, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Junior Fifa Kumhom cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over UC Davis’ Olive Maunupau.
 
The Cougars had two doubles teams in action Saturday, as Kumhom and Tse dropped a close one, falling 8-7 (4) to Oregon’s Sophie Luescher and Ares Teixido Garcia. WSU’s Eva Alvarez Sande and Yang Lee fell to No. 2-seed Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm of Cal, 8-4.
 
Play continues Sunday at the ITA Northwest Regionals.
