SAN RAMON– On Tuesday, the Pac-12 Conference announced that Arizona State’s Murphy Cassone was named Player of the Week after going 4-0 on the weekend, including match-clinching singles wins from the first position to fuel ASU to wins over No. 57 Oregon and Washington.
This is the second weekly award of the season for Cassone after he was named Player of the Week on March 5 when he had upset then-#4 ranked Ozan Baris of Michigan State.
In doubles play this weekend alongside teammate Jacob Bullard, the pair picked up two wins and improved to 9-1 as a duo this season. They earned a 7-5 win over the 46th ranked ITA doubles pair in Oregon’s Matthew Burton and Quinn Vandecastelle and followed with a 7-6(5) win over Washington’s Dzianis Zharyn Brett Pearson to clinch the doubles point for ASU.
From the first position in singles play, Cassone downed #83 Quinn Vandecastelle of Oregon 6-4, 7-6(2) to clinch the match against the Ducks and solidify the program’s 15th win this season. Against Washington, Cassone battled against Cesar Bouchelaghem eventually winning 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and clinching the match against the Huskies to end the team’s regular-season slate.
In this week’s ITA polls, Cassone is the #12 ranked singles player, and has broken the ITA doubles top-90 polls, sitting at #79 with Jacob Bullard after their 9-1 record together.
