Bernardo Munk Mesa won Thursday to join eight teammates in the singles main draw in Seattle.
SEATTLE – California men’s tennis freshman Bernardo Munk Mesa won a three-setter Thursday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships to advance out of qualifying singles and reach the main draw.
The Golden Bear had a bye in the opening round of 64 and then defeated Sacramento State’s Gur Libal 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32 at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The first-year Bear will join eight teammates in the singles main draw – second-seeded and 44th-ranked Theo Dean, third-seeded and 56th-ranked Carl Emil Overbeck, eighth-seeded and 123rd-ranked Alex Chang, Nos. 9-16 seed Derrick Chen, Nos. 9-16 seed Timofey Stepanov, Alex Aney, Jonathan Irwanto and Ethan Schiffman. The singles main draw begins Friday.
Additionally, Cal has five pairs in the doubles main draw at regionals – second-seeded and 13th-ranked Chang and Mikey Wright, third-seeded and 25th-ranked Overbeck and Dean, seventh-seeded Chen and Stepanov, Nos. 9-16-seeded Aney and Schiffman, and Irwanto and Munk Mesa. The doubles main draw also starts Friday.
