CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Tar Heels picked up three singles wins and a doubles victory in the Tom Chewning Invitational on Saturday at UNC’s Chewning Tennis Center. The second-day action in the event moved inside due to rain after playing outdoors on Friday for the first day of competition.
Carolina’s Will Peters, Peter Murphy and Dennis Perumov all earned singles wins on Saturday.
Peters, a graduate transfer from Princeton University, outlasted NC State’s Joesph Wayand in three sets despite losing a second-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-4. Murphy, a senior from Portland, Ore., beat Connor Laymon of Furman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. And Perumov, a walk-on who joined the Tar Heel roster this season, beat NC Central’s Naresh Bharathy in a pair of straight-set tiebreaks, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5).
In doubles play, Murphy and Peters teamed to defeat Ben Cahill and Emil Westling of Furman, 6-4.
Action at the Chewning Invitational will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Chewning Tennis Center. Admission is free.
