MSU Men’s Tennis Continues Fight in ITA Midwest Regional Action


EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men’s tennis has one singles player, junior Ozan Baris advancing to the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regionals as action continued Sunday at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Spartans had three players competing in singles matches and two doubles teams in action on Sunday, which included match play in the Round of 32 and quarterfinals for singles matches, along with quarterfinals and semifinals for double matches. 

In his first match of the day,  Baris took on Will Cooksey of Michigan, winning that match, 6-4, 7-6 [7-5]. While Baris’ match was finishing up, junior Aristotelis Thanos was starting his match against William Mroz from Illinois. A tough back-and-forth match led to Thanos losing, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 [4-7]. Ending out Round of 32 of singles matches was freshman Matthew Forbes, who took on Patorn Hanchaikul of Michigan, winning, 7-6 [7-2], 7-5, rallying from down 4-1 in the second set. 

Starting off singles semifinals action was Baris and Forbes. Baris took on Li of Ohio State and posted a 6-1, 6-1 win. After a short break, Forbes was back in action to take on William Mroz from Illinois, and Mroz defeated Forbes, 6-3, 6-3. 

Doubles semifinals started with sophomore Taym Alazmeh and freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev versus Bowers/Viiala of Illinois. After a tough fight from the Spartans but they could not finish out the match with a win, 4-6, 4-6. For a chance in the doubles finals, MSU’s Sheldon/Forbes took on Kittay/Young of Michigan. After hard-fought battle, the MSU duo fell, 6-7 [9-11], 6-4, 4-10. 

 

As ITA Midwest Regionals wrap up in East Lansing, three Spartans are heading to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the M15 Winston-Salem, Monday-Thursday Oct 14-17.  Senior Josh Portnoy, junior David Saye, and freshman Mitchell Sheldon are traveling to North Carolina for the Spartans.
