CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois redshirt junior William Mroz will compete at the ITA Central Sectional Championship from Nov. 7-10 in the final NCAA-qualifying event of the year. The four-day tournament will be hosted at TCU’s Bartzen Varsity Courts in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mroz will compete in singles play, starting with a first-round match on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT against No. 4-seeded Aristotelis Thanos of Michigan State. This will be the second meeting between the players this fall, with Mroz winning a three-set thriller, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(4), on Oct. 13.
The ITA Central Sectional marks Mroz’s third tournament appearance of the 2024 fall slate. He most recently took part in the ITA Midwest Regional in mid-October, advancing to the singles main draw semifinals but ultimately falling one round short of earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Championship. Mroz holds an 8-2 record in singles play this fall, including two wins against ranked opponents.
Six student-athletes from the ITA Central Sectional will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship, with four semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners earning a spot. After moving from the spring to the fall for the first time, the NCAA Individual Championships will be held from Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
Mroz will look to become the second Illinois men’s tennis student-athlete to progress to the NCAA Singles Championship after Kenta Miyoshi did so by advancing to the singles main draw final at the ITA Midwest Regional.
This weekend’s tournament features 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams across four days of action. The field includes student-athletes from Baylor, Memphis, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulsa, and Wichita State.
