Monday, Harper Earn ITA All-America Accolades

A pair of Tennessee men’s tennis standouts earned All-America recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, as was announced Monday.

Graduate student Pat Harper and junior Johannus Monday received the honors after strong 2022-23 campaigns for the Vols.

The ITA’s “All-American” title is given to student-athletes that earn a top-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship, advance to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship, or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings. All-America status is awarded to doubles teams that earn a top-eight seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship, reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship or finish in the top-10 of the final ITA doubles rankings.

Monday captured ITA Singles All-America status for a third consecutive season, recording a dual singles record of 19-3 this year, including a stellar mark of 16-3 (9-1 SEC) at the No. 1 singles lineup position. Boasting a 12-3 record against ranked singles competition, including a 5-0 mark against top-10 foes, Monday was named SEC Player of the Year.

Additionally, Monday rose a career-high ITA national singles ranking of No. 2 on March 21 and held that designation for over a month. Monday recorded his career-best singles winning streak in 2023, winning 12 consecutive matches from Jan. 28-March 31. He finished the season at No. 6 in the final ITA singles rankings.

Harper and Monday earned All-America honors on the doubles courts after a stellar season atop Tennessee’s doubles lineup.

The duo was ranked inside the top-eight in all but one set of ITA doubles rankings this dual season, logging a 17-5 dual doubles record together. Overall, Harper was 19-5 in dual doubles matches, while Monday posted a 20-4 mark. Each of Harper’s appearances in the doubles lineup came at the No. 1 position. The duo went 7-2 in SEC doubles action, rising to as high as No. 2 in the national ITA doubles rankings.

Harper, the fifth-year Vol from Australia, surpassed the 50-win mark at No. 1 doubles for his career, finishing at 51-21 (.708) at that lineup position. He further etched his name in the Tennessee record books, finishing his illustrious career with a 96-38 overall doubles record, the 10th-most career doubles wins in program history. Harper and Monday came in at No. 8 in the ITA’s year-end doubles rankings.
